Signing Up

The race is open to any current faculty, staff, student or graduated alumni of UNC Asheville.  Each team will require a minimum of 4 people, and a maximum of 8 people to participate.

Captains have until Wednesday, February 13 at 5:00 PM to sign up their entire team. For every 1 faculty, staff or alumni on a team, a 10 second head start will be given to that team. Additions/Substitutions can be made to the team’s roster until Wednesday, February 20 at 5:00pm. Any changes to your team need to be submitted and approved via email to Blair Jenkins at bjenkins@unca.edu.


As soon as your Big Wheel has arrived, your captain will be notified by Blair with a time that they can pick it up. The team may contribute their own funds toward enhancing their Big Wheel if necessary. The Big Wheel needs to be finished and race-ready by 9:30am on February 23rd. It is mandatory that the rider wear a helmet at all times. If you do not have a helmet, the Big Wheel Committee will provide one to you.

Notes on Bike Modifications: No engine or motors may be added to the bike.  Components of the bike may be upgraded, modified or decorated.  The basic frame must still be present on the final bike.  Additional elements can be added as long as they do not jeopardize the safety of anyone (i.e. no spikes on the wheels, or bottle rockets attached to the back). Race Day

All teams/participants should arrive to check-in at 9:30am.  The check-in table will be in front of the library on the quad.  The Race will begin up the ramp (in front of Governors Hall) to the quad. Once your team makes it to the quad, the race will consist of 3 laps around the quad square. On the 3rd and final lap your racers will drive to the flag pole to complete a short challenge. The finish line will be in front of the Library.

There must always be one driver, who is wearing a helmet, and one person assisting with the propulsion of the bike. That person has the choice to push or pull the rider. Each teammate needs to participate with driving or propelling the bike at some point during the race. There is a designated “pitstop” area at the library steps to make personnel changes.

If your bike becomes broken to the point that it can no longer roll on 3 wheels, your team is disqualified from the race. It is helpful to reinforce the wheels on your bike, as the max weight limit is 70 pounds.


For every 1 person on the team signed up that is not present for the race, that team will start 10 seconds behind.

General cheating, interfering, and going off track will be noted by a referee and a timed penalty will be assessed. During the race, there will be referees ensuring things are running smoothly. Their decisions for penalties are final.

Each team that signs up, gets materials, and doesn’t show up on race day will be assigned a $40 fee. PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP IF YOU CAN COMMIT TO THE RACE.


The winning team will be the first team to get their entire bike across the finish line, as well as both team members.  There will be awards for the top 3 finishing teams.
